Luxury Picnic Business Feature: Omi Picnics
Meet picnic boss India Pierce-Jackson, the founder and CEO of Omi Picnics.
Hi India, it's so wonderful to have you with us today. To get started can you tell us about and what inspires you?
Of course, my background is a bit nuanced and I think that's what makes me so passionate about the work I do. I am an educator, advocate, racial justice & DEI consultant, and now a PICNIC BOSS! To say that my plate is full is an understatement. I've often found myself stressed and overworked, which is not the type of life I want. It seems to always be that way, there are more things on our to-do list then there is time to complete them. Well, after a few life events that forced me to rethink the path I was on, I decided that if my plate is going to be full it needs to be full of things that bring me closer to joy. A lot of the work I do in other areas of my life deals with really heavy topics which can be draining. Omi Picnics has given me a much needed creative outlet.
Omi Picnics is my way of inviting slowness, joy, and connection into my life. I believe we could all use the opportunity to slow down and spend more time with the people we love. And honestly that is what inspires me, knowing that at Omi we are transforming our slice of the world, one picnic at a time, by creating unique experiences that allow our clients to slow down, spend time with those they love, and boldly chase joy.
What do you love about being a picnic boss?
I love seeing the faces of my clients as they approach the picnic. I will never get tired of their shock and awe, it’s wonderful! Also, as an owner of multiple businesses I really appreciate the space that being a picnic boss gives me to be creative and surround myself with the beauty of my city. I may be a little biased but San Diego, CA is one of the most beautiful cities in the U.S.
Another thing I love is being able to support other small business owners. My company is Black, woman, and queer owned. While my perspective shapes my business in a number of ways, one thing that I am most proud of is my commitment to “lift as I climb.” I am intentional about the vendors I use; making sure that I use my platform to provide opportunities for other women, people of color, and queer business owners.
What has been the biggest lesson you've learned as a business owner?
The lesson that I learn over and over is the importance of giving myself grace. My ultimate goal in life is to create a life built for joy. Sometimes that means that I have to move at a slower pace in my business in order to give my time and energy to other areas in my life. Often, I feel guilty about this and I feel this internal pressure to do more. In those moments I have to remind myself that I deserve the same grace that I give to others. I want to show up as present as possible in my businesses and in life, for my friends, self, and family. That requires a little give and take, and a whole lotta grace.
What are you dreaming of? What's next for you?
You know what they say, teamwork makes the dream work, so I am dreaming of extending my team. Doing so will allow me to reclaim some of my time and energy, which I will use to diversify my offerings. I have some great things on the horizon, so fingers crossed for me! I am also excited to build a space for picnic bosses all over the world to be in community with one another. 2022 is going to be a great year, I can feel it!
